Michaelstudied music at the Universities of Hull (under the composer John Joubert) and London, and his whole career has been devoted to running school music departments, particularly at Trent College and Hazelwood Prep School.
Two other major interests are composition and research. He has composed several song cycles and music for school and cathedral choirs. Future projects include a work for two clarinets and piano, and the setting of a Mass for a Welsh Cathedral choir.
In 2000, he embarked on a freelance career, teaching piano, organ, singing, theory and composition, and frequently acting as a freelance accompanist and organist.
Michael is Director of Music at Westerham Parish Church and also directs the Hurst Green Singers.
His researches into the byways of 20th century English music have borne fruit in articles in various journals, and his pièce de résistance has been a book on the life and music of George Butterworth, Whom the Gods Love, published by Toccata Press in 1997.
